Fast Diagnosis. Safe Repair. No Guesswork.

When power feels “loose” — some rooms work, some don’t, lights flicker when appliances start, outlets are dead for no obvious reason — the problem is almost never where it appears to be. A dead outlet across the house might be caused by a tripped GFCI in a completely different room. Flickering lights might be a loose neutral wire in the panel, not the fixture itself. Intermittent power loss might be a failing breaker that looks perfectly fine when you check it. Professional electrical troubleshooting means tracing the problem to its actual source — testing methodically, isolating circuits, and making a permanent repair, not a temporary fix. That’s exactly what we do, with a written quote before any work begins.

Common Electrical Problems We Diagnose & Fix

If any of these sound familiar, call us — we’ll find the cause and explain what it takes to fix it.

Partial Power Loss

Some rooms or outlets work, others don’t — one of the most common calls we get. Usually caused by a tripped GFCI, failed breaker, or loose connection upstream.

  • Half the house lost power suddenly
  • Specific rooms randomly lose power
  • Power comes and goes intermittently
  • Some outlets work, others on same wall don’t

Flickering & Dimming Lights

Flickering is rarely just a bulb problem. It often points to a loose neutral wire, an overloaded circuit, a failing breaker, or a connection issue that can become a fire hazard.

  • Lights dim when appliances start up
  • Whole house dims briefly then recovers
  • Recessed lights flicker or pulse
  • Lights flicker in one specific room only

Dead or Warm Outlets

A dead outlet is often a symptom of something upstream — a tripped GFCI in another room, a loose connection, or a failed receptacle. A warm outlet is a safety concern that needs immediate attention.

  • Outlet stopped working with no obvious cause
  • Outlet feels warm or hot to the touch
  • Burning smell near outlet or switch
  • Plug fits loosely and falls out

Breakers Tripping Repeatedly

A breaker that keeps tripping is doing its job — something is wrong. Resetting it repeatedly without diagnosis is a fire risk. We find the actual cause and fix it permanently.

  • Breaker trips when specific appliance runs
  • Breaker trips with no obvious overload
  • Breaker resets but trips again within minutes
  • Multiple breakers tripping at the same time

Buzzing, Sparking, or Burning

Any buzzing from a panel or switch, sparks from outlets, or burning smell near electrical devices are emergency-level symptoms. Don’t ignore these — call immediately.

  • Crackling or buzzing from panel
  • Sparks when plugging in a device
  • Burning plastic smell near outlets
  • Switch or outlet makes noise

GFCI & AFCI Issues

GFCI outlets protect multiple downstream outlets — when one trips, it can cut power to an entire section of your home. AFCI breakers protect against arc faults that cause fires.

  • GFCI won’t reset or keeps tripping
  • Can’t find which GFCI controls dead outlets
  • AFCI breaker tripping without clear cause
  • Old GFCI no longer protecting properly

How We Troubleshoot — Step by Step

Good electrical troubleshooting is methodical — not guesswork. Here’s exactly how we approach every diagnostic call.

Step 1 — Listen & Assess

We start by understanding exactly what you’re experiencing — when it happens, what changed recently, and which areas or circuits are affected. Context matters more than most people realize.

  • Review symptoms and affected areas
  • Ask about recent changes — new appliances, recent storms, any work done
  • Check panel for tripped breakers or visible issues

Step 2 — Circuit Isolation

We trace the affected circuit back to its source — identifying exactly which breaker, GFCI, or connection controls the problem area. This prevents wasted time testing the wrong components.

  • Map affected outlets and fixtures to their circuit
  • Locate and test all GFCI outlets on the circuit
  • Identify upstream connections that could be the cause

Step 3 — Test & Confirm

We test components methodically — outlets, switches, connections, breakers — to confirm the fault before recommending any repair. We never guess or replace parts hoping it fixes the issue.

  • Outlet and switch testing with proper tools
  • Breaker load testing and condition assessment
  • Connection inspection at outlets, switches, and panel

Step 4 — Quote, Repair & Verify

Once we’ve confirmed the fault, we explain what we found in plain language, provide a written quote for the repair, and get your approval before starting. After the repair, we verify everything works correctly.

  • Clear explanation of the fault and repair needed
  • Written quote — you approve before we proceed
  • Full test after repair — power restored and verified

What We Find & Fix on Troubleshooting Calls

Most electrical problems in Sacramento-area homes fall into a handful of categories. Here’s what we commonly find during diagnostic calls.

Loose Connections

The most common cause of flickering, intermittent power, and warm outlets. Connections loosen over time from thermal cycling — especially in older Sacramento homes with aluminum wiring.

Tripped GFCI Upstream

One GFCI outlet controls multiple “downstream” outlets — often in completely different rooms. When it trips, all downstream outlets go dead. We locate and reset or replace the controlling GFCI.

Failing Breakers

Breakers wear out — especially in panels over 20 years old. A failing breaker may trip at normal loads, refuse to reset, or look fine but not actually protect the circuit. We test and replace as needed.

Loose Neutral Wire

A loose neutral — usually at the panel or a junction box — causes voltage fluctuations that make lights flicker and can damage sensitive electronics. This is one of the more serious faults we find.

Worn Receptacles

Outlets wear out — the internal contacts loosen, causing poor contact, intermittent power, and heat. A plug that falls out or doesn’t stay seated is a worn receptacle that should be replaced.

Overloaded Circuits

Too many high-draw devices on one circuit causes repeated breaker trips. The fix is often adding a dedicated circuit — not just resetting the breaker and hoping for the best.

Sammy is fantastic! Grid Plus does great work, are very fast and offer competitive pricing. They did a major upgrade to our electrical service, replaced main and sub panels, replaced old, ungrounded circuits with new, and added new circuits for an electric dryer, water heater and EV charger. He also coordinated with SMUD for a larger gauge drop. All work was done smoothly and efficiently. Sammy kept us apprised of all steps and was always open to questions and requests. They set up an EV charger for some friends of ours and they were really happy with Grid Plus as well. We have and will continue to recommend Sammy and Grid Plus.

Hired Sami at Grid Plus Electric for an electrical panel replacement and an EV charger install. I got several bids for this job and asked every contractor a long list of questions. Sami answered every single one patiently and honestly, even when the honest answer wasn’t the one that made him the most money. He was also easy to reach the whole way through — a quick call or text and he’d get right back to me. Anyone who’s dealt with contractors knows how rare both of those are.

His price was very competitive, the work was clean, everything passed inspection, and he handled the utility rebate paperwork. When the charger didn’t arrive in time for install day, he came back on a second trip to install it, no complaints and no surprise charges.

Friendly, straightforward, and does exactly what he says he will. If you’re in the Sacramento area and need panel work or an EV charger install, hire Sami. Highly recommend!

Working with Sammy was amazing. He was the first technician to get in contact with me and was at my home within 30min of connecting with me. He was able to diagnose and resolve the problem in less than an hour. And at the last minute I requested additional items to complete and he had all the materials to get the job done. He provided a great price for the quality of work he performed. On top of that he sent detailed explanations, pictures, and videos to assess the problems and show proof of completion, which I greatly appreciated

Electrical Troubleshooting FAQ

Common questions about electrical problems in Orangevale, Folsom, and the Sacramento area.

Why do some outlets work but others don’t?
The most common reason is a tripped GFCI outlet somewhere upstream — often in a bathroom, kitchen, or garage — that controls multiple outlets throughout the home. When that GFCI trips, all the outlets it protects go dead, even if they’re in completely different rooms. Other causes include a loose connection, a failed receptacle, or a tripped breaker. We trace the circuit and fix the root cause.
Why are my lights flickering?
Flickering lights are rarely just a bulb problem. If lights flicker when a large appliance starts — like an AC, refrigerator, or washing machine — that’s a voltage drop caused by the startup load, which could indicate an overloaded circuit or a panel issue. If lights flicker randomly with no obvious trigger, it often points to a loose neutral wire or a failing connection — which is a more serious fault. Either way, it’s worth diagnosing before it becomes a bigger problem.
Is flickering always an emergency?
Not always — but it can be. Occasional flickering when an appliance starts is usually not urgent. Constant or worsening flickering, especially combined with a burning smell, warm outlets, or frequent breaker trips, should be treated as an urgent issue and diagnosed as soon as possible. If you’re unsure, call us — we’ll help you determine how urgent it is.
Why does my breaker keep tripping?
A breaker trips when it detects too much current — that’s its job. Common causes include an overloaded circuit (too many devices on one breaker), a short circuit in a device or wiring, a ground fault, or a failing breaker that trips at lower loads than it should. Resetting it repeatedly without diagnosis is a fire risk — the breaker is telling you something is wrong. We find the cause and fix it properly.
What causes a burning smell near an outlet or panel?
A burning smell is a serious warning — it usually means arcing, overheating wiring, or a failing device. Turn off the circuit if safe to do so and don’t use the outlet or switch until it’s been inspected. This is not something to wait on — call us immediately. If you see smoke or suspect an active fire, call 911 first.
Can troubleshooting uncover bigger issues?
Yes — especially in older Sacramento-area homes. A simple flickering light call sometimes reveals loose wiring throughout a circuit, an undersized panel, or aluminum wiring that needs attention. If we find something significant, we stop and explain what we found with photos before recommending any additional work. You always decide what to do next.
Do you provide a clear quote before repairs?
Always. We diagnose first, explain exactly what we found in plain language, and provide a written quote before any repair work starts. You know the price and what’s included before we pick up a tool. No surprise charges, no work without your approval.
